Treasure boxes!  Students in Art 1 are working on clay treasure boxes.  I showed them vessels of different sorts that transcend cultures, reminding us that as humans we are all like and want similar things.  The Russian kholkova box and Chinese puzzle box are just a few of these examples.  Here are the are in progress below.

It is very exciting for me to be teaching two sections of Art 1, along with Mrs. Self this semester.  Currently students completed their pop can studies which is a great skill builder as they draw from life and are challenged when the can takes on a new form in each study.  Also they are required to color match, shade with five different values and exhibit understanding of stippling and crosshatching.

Because I do not teach Art I this semester the work seen here is created by Mrs. Self's students.  She is the full-time art teacher at Edison Middle School.  Enjoy!

Below are the completed self portraits Mrs. Self did with her students last semester.  As we wrapped up grades and common assessments last week, I got a little behind in posting our most recent work.

Students in Mrs. Self's Art One class are working on self portraits in grayscale.  The backgrounds are the choice of the artist and can be figurative or more true-to-life based on the photograph they are working from.  Students are concentrating on improving their technical skill and matching corresponding values.  I love watching them progress!

Radial Design
Students in Art 1 began with a radial design project this week concentrating on insects, birds and amphibians.  Radial symmetry is a great way to incorporate math into the arts when students begin to see the multiplication of an object and the mirrored appearance.  This project also allows for students to develop their skills in layering colored pencils.  They are working towards blending analogous colors to add dimension to their work.

Andy Warhol Inspired Self Portrait Prints

Students in Art 1 are looking at the work of Andy Warhol to create linoleum prints of themselves.  Using a photograph as a guide, they are working in a reduction-style to carve into their block for several layers of printing. For this project students are gaining experience with the complicated process of printmaking by carving away the portion of their self portrait they don't want to be printed.

Albrecht Durer Inspired Textured Animals

Students in Art 1 recently looked at the work of Albrecht Durer (above) and his dramatic approach to animals with unpredictable texture.  This mixed media project challenged students to create an animal including five various textures.  They then added color through the manipulation of watercolor paints and watercolor pencils.  Finally, students designed and carved a small linoleum piece to incorporate printmaking and pattern.  Many of these are still in progress but coming along beautifully!
