New students, new beautiful work...
Here are some of the completed jazz instruments of my current sixth grade classes.  Enjoy!  I know I am having a blast with these guys!  (Please excuse the orientation of some of the pieces.  I have a very cute two-year-old who is dying to plays trucks and I can't figure out why I can't flip these images like I normally do when I post them! :)

Below are some of our completed Andy Warhol projects from last semester, which ended last Friday.  Many of them have been moved to the Sippo Library for a special display this month also.  I love the outcome and love all of the valuable color information my students acquired while working in the various schemes.

Andy Warhol POP Art
I love the project we are currently working on where students are creating art from a favorite object of their choice.  This was designed by my colleague Miss Loudon and you can follow her blog at /http://pfeifferartists.wordpress.com/.  After they recreate their image four times in repetitive Warhol style they are then painting with color scheme in mind.  For example one block can be primary, secondary, warm, cool, complementary, etc.

Wow!  Where has the time gone?  Here are some of the completed masks that are in my room.  Many others that were completed earlier are in the front showcase and were on display last week during our Winter Choir concert.  I will photograph them and add them later.  But for now, here are a few!

November 30, 2012
It has been such a busy week coming back from Thanksgiving break.  We began working three dimensionally on our paper mache/plaster masks.  Here are some pictures in their earliest stages, however I hope to post more about the project next week when I catch my breath a little bit.

JAZZ INSTRUMENTS COMPLETE
Read more about this project below:)

November 16, 2012
I am starting a new nine weeks with a great group of new kids.  We are beginning with a previous favorite project of mine... Jazz Instruments.

Students in sixth grade loved experiencing art and music in one!  We discussed how both creating art and playing music allow for the freedom of expression.  We also looked at various famous pieces of art that centered around music and saw how the color choices made for the painting effected how the students perceived the music being played in the piece to sound.  After learning about the main instruments of jazz, students created these collage paintings using a cropping approach to their instrument.

Andy Warhol Studies
We ended the nine week session with an interesting pop art project.  I was inspired to do this lesson from something I saw over at www.dalimoustache.blogspot.com.  Although I feel there was knowledge gained, I would definitely change my approach to this if I were to do it again. Students looked to the work of artist Andy Warhol and his repetitive style in garish, bright colors.  Next we used an altered photograph to create a small and warm and cool colored painting.  I feel the project was slightly rushed as the nine weeks was ending and I didn't want to see my students leave!  There is always so much to learn and create and so little time to do it in!

Endangered Animal Printing Project Complete!

Students in sixth grade completed these printing projects utilizing complementary colors and taking inspiration from artist Carol Lozito and her endangered animal paintings.  Read more below about our entire lesson and enjoy the artwork:)

Endangered Animal Printmaking

Students looked to the artwork of inspirational artist Carol Lozito as a starting point for their recent printmaking project.  Here they are in the early stages of sketching an animal they researched and found to be on the endangered species list.  Next week we will move into carving into styrofoam printing plates and using ink to recreate them.

PLASTER MASKS!
Students have recently been inspired by masks we have looked that have been created for various reasons including culture, disguise, protection and performance.  The masks showed a variety of color and texture.  First students planned out their mask according to their interests.  Next, we used plaster on molds.  Lastly, we are in stages of adding appendages, paint and embellishments.  They are all so unique and personal.  Great job students!

Alan Bean Inspired Self Portraits

To the moon!  Students in sixth grade stayed engaged through this creative project while learning how to create three-dimensional depth on a two-dimensional surface.  Taking inspiration from Alan Bean, an astronaut who later became a well-known painter, they created these out-of-this world self-portraits.  Like Bean students concentrated on the illusion of depth and also proper facial proportions that allowed for the integration of Math!  Texture was another term students became very familiar with as they were fascinated by the surface Bean created using modeling paste and his old moon boots.  Check out Alan Bean's site... here
